One reason I am so inspired by our First Nations is because they understood, appreciated and used symbolism from the natural world. The colors red, black and white were very important to the Cherokee, and each of the fauna and flora that the seven Cherokee clans were named for, held significant meaning for the place that clan held within the tribe. As an artist who delights in symbolism, I love that.
I do love a picture that tells a story. This one suggests a lot of questions which also makes me happy. Who is she turning to smile at, on this early morning stolen visit? Were they worth the wait? She seems to think so, since her smile rivals the early morning sunshine.
For my references on this image, I used a Colorado model with Native American background, designed and fitted her Victorian costume myself, and scoped out the setting we would use, ahead of time.
